We have investigated the physical properties of Heavy Fermion superconductors by the ac calorimetry under high pressure using a thermocouple. The method is powerful tool since the high sensitive measurement of the heat capacity is possible and the precise pressure dependence of transition temperatures such as the superconducting transition can be determined. In this conference, I would like to report our investigations on the heavy fermion superconductors CePtSi, CeNiGe and UIr. We have made pressure phase diagram of these compounds and discuss the relation between the magnetism and superconductivity.

This is because heat capacity involves a strong quantum effect especially at low temperatures. For example, it is known that conventional classical molecular dynamics method overestimates the heat capacity of water. In this report, we show that heat capacity can be calculated by path integral molecular dynamics method considering the quantum effect. The calculated heat capacities for the three states of water and its isotope effect have been found in good agreement with experiment at wide temperature range.

In general, quantitative estimation of heat capacity has been a difficult but an important issue in molecular simulation. This is because heat capacity involves quantum mechanics of atomic motions, particularly at the low temperature range. One of the useful approaches to such quantum systems is path integral simulation method. However, heat capacity, which is the dispersion of energy, is so computationally demanding that it was not feasible until the recent development of parallel computers and efficient algorithms. In this paper, we introduce a path integral molecular dynamics approach for the estimation of heat capacities, and apply this technique to three states of water.

We succeeded in growing a high-quality single crystal of UIr with the monoclinic PbBi-type structure by the Czochralski pulling method in a tetra-arc furnace. The magnetization measurement indicates that UIr is an Ising-like ferromagnet with the Curie temperature = 46 K. The magnetic moment is found to be oriented along the [1 0 /U. The magnetic property, reflected in the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient and thermoelectric power, is highly anisotropic. We also observed the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation. All the detected branches have large cyclotron effective masses ranging from 9.6 to 32 . They are consistent with the electronic specific heat coefficient =49 mJ/Kmol.
